Fish River
Kayak Launch–Day Trip
(Bohemian Park to Marlow Ferry at Historic Farragut’s Basin)
Begin your kayak adventure at Fish River Bohemian Park, launching from the park’s white, sandy river beach into the upper reaches of Fish River. This scenic point-to-point paddle covers approximately 6.17 miles (GPS-measured). Paddled straight through with minimal stops, the trip can take as little as 2.5 hours, ending at Marlow Ferry in the historic Farragut’s Basin. For those looking to enjoy a longer, more leisurely day on the river, this kayak can be stretched out to 5 or 6 hours as it offers plenty of opportunities to slow down and savor the experience. Stop along sandy riverbanks for a picnic, swim, or relax beneath the trees—or paddle over to Big Daddy’s Grill for a riverside meal on the deck before continuing downstream. Upper River Section (First ~3 Miles): The first three miles wind through a shallow, narrow creek-like stretch of the upper river, where a gentle but steady current does much of the work for you. This section is stunningly beautiful, requiring very little paddling beyond light steering. A lush tree canopy filters the sunlight, creating a peaceful atmosphere and excellent conditions for photography. During periods of lower water (below normal) levels, brief portages may be required at select points along this stretch. Lower River Section (Final ~3 Miles): The final portion of the trip transitions into a wider, deeper river. Here, the current slows to an almost unnoticeable drift, and steady paddling is required. This section is more developed, with waterfront homes lining the banks and occasional larger pleasure and fishing boats passing through. Throughout the entire route, wildlife sightings are common. Paddlers often encounter a variety of birds, turtles, and occasionally otters, with large fish frequently visible in the lower river. Kayakers are responsible to make their own transportation arrangements in advance for once they arrive by kayak to the end of the paddle at Marlow Ferry.
